I am sitting here in the Austin, TX airport waiting for my flight back to home base in San Diego. It was my first time in Austin, and it lived up to my lofty expectations.
I was in town for my friend’s wedding. It was beautiful. I hadn’t seen him in about 5 years. He is a childhood friend.
You always can feel when you’re in Texas and Austin is no exception. After flying in and finding nothing available at the Austin Motel. I drove my brand new Ford Mustang rental to Motel 6. Motel 6 is my standard for clean and basic place to sleep when I’m on the cheap. They say they’ll “leave the light on for you”, but they never do. Everyone’s “going green” these days. I felt like I was in the movie No Country For Old Men with all the characters at the motel.
After a quick nap, I headed over to the rehearsal dinner. It was nice and casual and with Texas BBQ and brisket, whatever that is.
From there we headed over to Downtown for a debaucherous night of binge drinking with old friends and new faces. Weddings always bring a collision of different circles, something that I always enjoy.
I was looking for some decent prospects to no avail. There were several girls from in the wedding circle interested in me that first night, but none that caught my fancy. I could have had one of those borderline one night stands but luckily I easily maintained self control. Having high standards can sometimes be frustrating but also a blessing on nights like this.
The next day, I had some Texas breakfast at Magnolia Cafe. It delivered and I recommend it for some good eats if you happen to be in town. From there, I headed with some old friends over to the Capitol building.
It is supposedly the largest Capitol building in the United States. It’s very impressive and very Texas. It definitely contributes to Austin’s image and the locals seem to identify with the place.
I then headed home for a quick nap. I woke up late and had to rush over to the wedding. I made it literally a minute before it started. It was outdoors. Of course, it was beautiful. I was really happy for my buddy. And this was followed by yet another night of binge drinking. I am definitely feeling like I am getting older.
Sunday this morning. I woke up with just enough time to get out just before check out time (12PM at Motel 6, another nice plus). I headed over to Hut’s Hamburgers. I am a burger afficianado and I was curious to try out the place after reading AOL’s suspect list of the best burger joints in the US. I had a solid hamburger, excellent onion rings, and a decent vanilla milkshake. It is worth checking out.
So that’s about it, from there I hung out with my buddy for a little… and so here I am. I nice little three day weekend tripper that flew by quickly. I’ll definitely be back. Thanks for a great time Austin!
